I found the following statement from this article to be quite alarming.
"Vulvovaginitis is considered to be one of the most common gynecological problems in premenarchal girls, accounting for approximately 80% to 90% of outpatient visits by children to gynecology offices"
The authors included the following list of instructions for vulval care.
1. Ensure your child takes the medication as prescribed by her doctor.
2. Use 100% white cotton underwear and was this in gentle detergent that has no perfumes or dyes.
3. Use toilet paper with no perfumes or dyes.
4. Avoid bubble baths.
5. Use a bar of soap in the bathtub, which is gentle with no perfumes or deodorants. Use soap sparingly. Avoid using soap on the vulva.
6. Keep your child's bottom as clean and dry as possible.
7. Make sure to change her into a dry bathing suit after swimming so moisture doesn't remain on her bottom.
8. Review instructions to wipe from front to back after using the bathroom.
9. Review frequent hand washing with your daughter.
10. Have your daughter urinate with her legs apart.
Following this advice could save much discomfort - for both Mom and her daughter.
Be sure to visit your doctor if you or your loved ones are experiencing any symptoms that cause you concern.
